Pastor Garfield Palmer who was enthused about working in the community, requested and got permission from Bishop D. Kitson to convene bible studies in the community. These meetings were held in an unused building to the back of the current premises. The building was originally operated as an entertainment centre; hence the church had to be in constant prayer and fasting sessions in order to withstand the attacks of the enemy in the ‘spiritual realm’.
Over-time the attendance from community members became overwhelming and so the meetings were moved to the front of the building – this time outdoors. In the year 2002 seven brethren (Pastor G Palmer, Evangelist J Briscoe, Bro. W Roberts, Bro. G and Sis. C Lovemore, Sis. M Campbell and Sis. A Thorne) were officially released from the Waltham Park Rd Assembly to conduct services in Portmore. The owner upon request gave permission for meetings to be held indoors and in June 2003, the first Sunday morning service was held.
As time progressed other brethren joined the team and continued the work. Min. and Sis. C Meekly were eventually sent to assist with the work. The first crusade service held at the location in 2003, yielded one convert in the person of Bro. P Malcolm who thanks be to God is still standing. Over the years the church grew both spiritually and numerically. However due to migration locally and internationally the membership has fluctuated.
Over the years the church has shared a close relationship with the community and as such is sometimes referred to as the ‘community church’.
